Some of the most talented people in the world, especially musicians, are not yet widely known to the masses. Rocco Deluca is one of those amazing people that the music world is just now starting to find. I purchased a documentary film of Rocco Deluca and his band (The Burden) this weekend and was blown away by his craftsmanship and voice. In the film, Rocco is seen wearing the classic styling of the Oliver Peoples sunglass “Lykos”. This retro piece is a beautiful frame that also features the Oliver Peoples amazing advanced VFX technology lens.

Check out Rocco Deluca’s website and MySpace page and definitely see the noted documentary of the band, “I Trust You To Kill Me”.

A Different Kind of Music List: Best of 2007

•  Rocco DeLuca & The Burden

I_trust_you_to_kill_meThis is the most interesting new rock album I’ve heard in some time: I Trust You To Kill Me. Their sound is original — a jangly roots-rock romp laced with bluegrass and countrified leanings.

I agree with the reviewer who wrote that their bluesy debut album “fairly vibrates on DeLuca’s Dobro steel guitar and throaty wail.”

DeLuca careens from influence to influence, paying homage to his predecessors and then going a step further. The music is flavored with dollops of Jeff Buckley, Coldplay but most of all, Bron Y-Aur Stomp era Led Zeppelin.

I Trust You To Kill Me is one of those rare discs where there in not a single weak cut on the CD.

Rocco Deluca & The Burden

Biography

Coming across like a cross between Beck’s casual mastery of various musical idioms (minus the surrealistic sarcasm) and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with a much stronger take on the music’s history, Rocco Deluca plays a decidedly modern take on traditional blues-rock. Born in Southern California in 1976, Deluca claims to have largely grown up on the R&B touring circuit, the son of a single father who was one of Bo Diddley’s backing guitarists. Exposed to the blues both on the tour bus and in family living room jam sessions, Deluca picked up the guitar at a young age, and eventually settled on the Dobro (a resonating metal-top guitar that was a key part of Delta blues in the age before amplification) as his primary instrument. After several years continuing the vagabond lifestyle of his childhood, Deluca settled back in Los Angeles and started a weekly residency at the Gypsy Lounge, a well-known blues and country bar in Orange County. While opening for bluesmen like Taj Mahal, Deluca caught the attention of an A&R representative for Ironworks Records, a new independent label started by ’80s pop singer Jude Cole and actor Kiefer Sutherland, and in 2004 became the label’s first signing. During sessions for Deluca’s first album, produced by Cole, the pair put together a full-time backing band for Deluca’s vocals and Dobro, consisting of bassist Dave Beste, percussionist Gary Velasquez, and drummer Ryan Carman. That debut album, I Trust You to Kill Me, was released in March 2006, coinciding with a DVD documentary by the same title that featured Sutherland shepherding Rocco Deluca & the Burden on their first international press tour. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

This is my Rocco Deluca poster. A friend gave it to me as a wedding gift. She knows how much I love music. I have this sitting on my desk, leaning against the cube wall because I didn’t get anything to hang it yet. It will probably stay like that for years.

Heineken Premieres Student Videos at Paley Center

Beer and college students have always had a special connection, but at an event at the Paley Center on Thursday, the bond between the two appeared perhaps more productive than usual. It was the premiere for two new music videos, made by grad students at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with grants from Heineken. The beer brand gave two teams of students the chance to direct and edit the pieces with guidance from the bands Rocco DeLuca & the Burden and Low Stars. Both bands also performed at the event. An after-party followed the screenings, with Corso Communications handling production and Strategic Group handling celebrity outreach and some PR. —Alesandra Dubin
